Phillip Cornegé


Phillip is an experienced litigator, providing advice and representation on a range of civil, criminal, and public law matters. He also acts for defendants in regulatory and professional disciplinary proceedings, and before sporting (including racing) disciplinary bodies.

Phillip has worked in leading commercial firms, and the Crown Solicitor’s office at Hamilton. He is an effective trial and appellate advocate, having appeared as lead counsel in over 100 jury trials and High Court appeals. He is also an experienced negotiator.

Phillip joined the independent bar in February 2014.

Career Highlights & Recent Experience


  • Acting for the Official Assignee in a range of commercial and compliance matters, including conducting complex public examinations of bankrupts, and appearing on the leading cases on the scope of public examinations, travel appeals under the Insolvency Act 2006, and the standard to which creditor claims much be proved;
  • Acting for the New Zealand Māori Council in the High Court and Waitangi Tribunal;
  • Successfully defending a complex debt recovery claim by Crown Asset Management, arising from lending by South Canterbury Finance.
  • Successfully representing a trainer and stable hand before the Racing Appeals Tribunal.
  • Successfully representing a Registered Nurse in Discplinary Proceedings before the Nursing Council.
  • Acting for the Commissioner of Police in successful civil forfeiture proceedings under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009.
  • Acting for both employers and employees before the Employment Relations Authority, and for the (then) Department of Labour on health and safety matters.
  • Appearing as lead counsel for the Crown on serious criminal and regulatory matters.
  • Acting as amicus curiae in respect of an application for a writ of habeas corpus.
  • Sitting as Chair of several sporting disciplinary tribunals.
  • Representing the estate in a claim under the Law Reform (Testamentary Promises) Act 1949.
  • Acting for the Rotorua District Council in a rates dispute before the Land Valuation Tribunal and subsequent appeals to the High Court and Court of Appeal.
  • Successfully acting in relationship property litigation before the Family Court;
  • Acting as lead counsel in several judicial review proceedings.
  • Successfully appealing a judgment of the Māori Land Court appointing new trustees to a Māori Reservation.
